Giving adequate water to drink for children in creches

1. Importance of drinking water for children

  • It helps children stay hydrated and active.
  • Aids digestion, temperature regulation, and nutrient absorption.
  • This helps prevent constipation and reduces the risk of urinary infections.

2. Quantity and Frequency

  • Children should be encouraged to drink small amounts of water frequently- especially after physical activity, meals, or during hot weather.
  • Provide clean drinking water at least every 1-2 hours.
  • Water should be offered even if children don’t ask, especially for younger ones.

3. Source and storage of drinking water

  • Use safe drinking water (boiled, filtered and cooled).
  • Store water in a gravity-based water filter.
  • Store the water filter off the floor and away from sunlight or chemicals.

4. Clean handling and serving

  • Always wash hands before touching water containers.
  • Use a clean ladle or tap to serve- never dip cups or hands directly into the storage container.
  • Use individual cups for each child or properly washed shared cups.
  • Clean the storage containers daily and keep a cleaning log.

5. Encouraging water drinking habits

  • Remember and encourage children to drink water regularly, especially younger ones who may not ask for it.
  • Offer water after outdoor play, snacks, meals, and naps.
  • Observe signs of dehydration (dry mouth, tiredness, irritability) and act promptly.
